Adapting to new dentures takes some time and patience. Here's what to expect:

  • Initial Adjustment Period - Most patients require 2-4 weeks to fully adapt to new dentures
  • Eating Techniques - Start with soft foods and gradually progress to more challenging foods
  • Speech Adaptation - Reading aloud helps you adapt to speaking with dentures
  • Follow-up Appointments - Regular adjustments ensure optimal comfort and fit

We're committed to supporting you throughout the adjustment process with personalized guidance and any necessary adjustments to ensure your comfort and satisfaction.

The Denture Creation Process

Our comprehensive approach to creating your custom dentures

1

Initial Consultation

We begin with a thorough examination of your oral health, discussing your needs, preferences, and expectations. This includes evaluating your gum health, any remaining teeth, and taking measurements of your jaw relationships. We'll explain your denture options and help you choose the best solution for your situation.

2

Preparatory Treatments

If needed, we'll perform any necessary preparatory dental work, such as extractions of unsalvageable teeth or treatment of gum issues. For immediate dentures, we'll take impressions before any extractions. For conventional dentures, we'll allow time for proper healing after extractions before proceeding to the next step.

3

Impressions & Measurements

We take detailed impressions of your gums, any remaining teeth, and jaw structure using high-precision digital or traditional methods. These impressions create an exact model of your mouth that serves as the foundation for your custom dentures. We'll also record precise measurements of your bite relationship and jaw movements.

4

Wax Try-In

Before finalizing your dentures, we create a wax model for you to try. This critical step allows us to check the fit, appearance, and bite alignment. You'll have the opportunity to see how your new teeth will look and feel, and we can make adjustments to ensure you're completely satisfied with the appearance and comfort before proceeding.

5

Denture Fabrication

After any necessary adjustments from the wax try-in, our dental laboratory crafts your final dentures using high-quality materials. The denture base is typically made from acrylic resin colored to match your natural gum tissue, while the teeth are made from durable, natural-looking porcelain or resin materials customized to your desired appearance.

6

Final Fitting & Adjustments

When your dentures are complete, we'll have you try them on for a final fitting. We'll check the fit, comfort, appearance, and function, making any necessary minor adjustments. We'll also provide detailed instructions on denture care, cleaning, insertion and removal techniques, and what to expect during the adaptation period. Follow-up appointments ensure your dentures continue to fit comfortably.

Quality dentures restore much of your natural chewing ability, allowing you to enjoy a wider variety of foods and maintain better nutrition for overall health.

Clearer Speech

Well-fitted dentures help you speak more clearly and confidently, eliminating the speech difficulties that often accompany missing teeth.

Facial Support

Dentures FAQs

Common questions about dentures and denture care

We offer several types of dentures to meet your specific needs: Complete (Full) Dentures replace all teeth in an arch and are used when no natural teeth remain. Partial Dentures fill gaps when some natural teeth are still present and attach to your remaining teeth for stability. Immediate Dentures are placed the same day as extractions so you're never without teeth. Implant-Supported Dentures attach to dental implants for superior stability and comfort. Custom Dentures are premium options with higher-quality materials and more personalized aesthetics. During your consultation, we'll discuss which option is best for your situation.
Most patients require an adjustment period of about 2-4 weeks with new dentures. Initially, you may experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and changes in speech patterns. These issues typically resolve as your mouth adapts. Speaking and eating may feel different at first, but practicing reading aloud and starting with soft foods will help you adjust faster. If discomfort persists beyond a few weeks or worsens, contact us for an adjustment appointment. Remember that adaptation is a normal process, and patience is key to successful denture wear.
Proper denture care is essential for longevity and oral health: Clean your dentures daily by removing and gently brushing them with a soft denture brush and specialized denture cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive). Rinse dentures thoroughly after meals. Soak dentures overnight in a denture-cleaning solution or water. Never use hot water, which can warp the denture material. Handle dentures carefully over a folded towel or basin of water to prevent breakage if dropped. Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Clean your mouth and gums daily with a soft toothbrush. Schedule regular dental check-ups for professional cleaning and evaluation.
With proper care, dentures typically last between 5-10 years. However, this timeframe can vary based on several factors including the quality of materials used, how well you maintain them, changes in your oral structure, and normal wear and tear. Over time, your gum ridges can shrink and change shape, affecting the fit of your dentures. Regular dental check-ups allow us to evaluate your dentures and make adjustments as needed. Relines every 2-3 years can help maintain proper fit as your mouth changes. When dentures become worn or no longer fit properly despite adjustments, it's time for replacement.
Initially, eating with new dentures requires some adaptation, but most patients successfully adjust to eating a normal diet. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. Gradually introduce more solid foods as you become comfortable. Avoid very hard, sticky, or tough foods that can dislodge dentures or cause discomfort. Hot foods may feel different since dentures insulate from temperature sensations. Some challenging foods like corn on the cob, whole apples, or chewy steak may require different techniques or cutting into smaller pieces. Implant-supported dentures provide significantly better chewing efficiency than conventional dentures.
Some temporary speech changes are common when first wearing dentures, particularly with pronouncing certain sounds. Words with 'S', 'F', and 'TH' sounds may be challenging initially. Most patients adapt within a few weeks as the tongue and oral muscles adjust to speaking with dentures. Practicing by reading aloud and speaking slowly can speed up adaptation. If speech problems persist, we can make adjustments to your dentures. Dentures that fit properly should ultimately improve speech compared to having missing teeth. Implant-supported dentures typically cause fewer speech issues than conventional dentures due to their increased stability.
While you can occasionally sleep with dentures in, we generally recommend removing them at night to give your gum tissues and jawbone a rest from the pressure of dentures. Removing dentures while sleeping also allows for better circulation in the gum tissues and helps prevent conditions like denture stomatitis (inflammation of tissue under dentures). Store dentures in water or denture solution when not wearing them to prevent them from drying out and warping. If you have implant-supported dentures, follow the specific recommendations provided for your type of restoration, as guidance may differ.
If your dentures break or crack, contact our office immediately. Never attempt to repair dentures yourself with household glues or adhesives, as these can contain harmful chemicals and cause further damage. Bring all the pieces to your appointment, even small fragments. Depending on the extent of damage, we may be able to repair them, or replacement might be necessary. For minor repairs, we may complete them in-office the same day. More complex issues might require sending your dentures to a dental laboratory. If you can't come in immediately, store the broken dentures in water to prevent warping and avoid wearing damaged dentures, which can cause oral injuries.
